Yasmine Deleon, of Stafford, was killed after the horse she was riding in a field off Mt. Olive Road was “spooked” and then ran into the street, where the horse and the girl was hit by an oncoming Kia Sorrento.
Virginia State Police Sgt. Les Tyler the horse died at the scene when it was hit head-on by the Kia, driven by a 40-year-old woman.
Both the child and the woman were taken to Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg for their injuries.
The child died about 10 p.m., and the woman’s condition remains unknown, according to Tyler.
No charges have been filed in the crash that occurred in the area of Mt. Olive and Poplar roads. The child does not live in the area where the crash occurred, but does live in Stafford County, added Tyler.
The crash remains under investigation.
