Driver Charged in Fatal Bus Crash

Update 4:15 p.m.
A New York man faces charges in a bus crash that killed four and injured scores of others today near Kings Dominion.

Kin Yiu Cheung, 37, of Flushing, N.Y. is charged with reckless driving after the bus he was driving along Interstate 95 north ran off the right side of the road, flipped, and landed on its top.

The bus was traveling between Greensboro, N.C. and New York City.

Four females were killed and many other victims were taken to 11 hospitals between Richmond and Fredericksburg, said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

Police said Cheung was tired, and blamed the crash on driver fatigue. He was treated for minor injuries on the scene and then taken to Pamunkey Regional Jail and was held on $3,000 bond, said Geller.

Investigators have ruled out any mechanical errors or malfunctions that could have lead to this crash.

Police have not identified the four females who were killed in the crash, as they working to notify next of kin. After families are notified, police will then identify the victims.

The bus that crashed is owned by Sky Express, and WTOP Radio reports that company has had

buses involved in several accidents over the past two years and has had 46 violations for drivers being fatigued.

 

 

There were 58 passengers onboard the bus when it crashed his morning.

Update 11:45 a.m.
Two lanes of Interstate 95 north have been reopened following a fatal bus crash this morning.

The left and center lanes at mile post 103 near the crash scene in Caroline County, near Carmel Church, are now carrying drivers past the accident scene. The right lane remains closed for debris clean up, and drivers in the area may experience some delays, said Virginia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Kelly Hannon.

That portion of the highway had been closed for the crash investigation, and drivers had been detoured onto U.S. 1 around the accident scene.

Update 11:40 a.m.
The bus that flipped over onto its roof and killed four people overnight was headed to New York City’s Chinatown district.

The bus crashed at 4:55 a.m. on Interstate 95 north in Caroline County, south of Fredericksburg, with 58 passengers and one driver aboard.

Four people were pronounced dead and several others were taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

Officials say the crash was caused by driver fatigue, and that charges against the unidentified driver are pending.

Virginia State Police accident reconstruction team remains on the scene of the crash, about quarter mile south of mile post 104 at Carmel Church. NBCWashington.com reports the National Transportation Safety Board is also heading to the scene to investigate the crash.

The bus is licensed to Sky Express in Charlotte, N.C. It left Greensboro, N.C. at 10:30 p.m. Monday in route to New York City, said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

Following the crash, a minor fuel leak occurred but was contained, said Geller.

I-95 remained closed at 11:30 a.m., as investigators righted the bus and towed it away.

Northbound traffic was being diverted from the highway onto U.S. 1 at mile post 98 and then allowed to return to the highway at mile post 110.

Update 8:20 a.m.
Four people have been killed after a commercial tour bus crashed on Interstate 95 this morning.

The bus ran off the right side of the road, overturned, and came to a rest on its roof.

The bus is not a Greyhound bus, which has been incorrectly reported by some media sources, said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

The crash happened at 4:55 a.m. on the northbound side of I-95 in Caroline County.

In addition to the four who were killed, several others were taken to an area hospital.

Caroline County, Va. –– At least one person has died this morning and several others are injured after a bus crashed on Interstate 95.

The crash happened at 4:55 a.m. at northbound mile post 103 in Caroline County, just south of the Carmel Church exit.

A portion of the highway has been closed and traffic diverted off the highway at mile post 98 at Kings Dominion, directed onto U.S. 1, and then routed back to I-95 north, said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

The crash is masked by a wooded median and cannot be seen by southbound drivers, which has prevented rubbernecking, added Geller.
