Dumfries officials will hold a public hearing on Wednesday to ban firearms and ammunition at its town hall, located at 17739 Main Street.

The Town Council cites a state law that allows local governments to ban firearms in municipal buildings.

Specifically, in Dumfries, the proposed ban would affect only the town government offices at the town hall. Dumfries also rents office space within its town hall and will not ban guns in those offices, the town's ordinance states.

[Updated 1 p.m.] One person who was taken to a hospital after they were shot several times outside a Wawa gas station is expected to recover.

Meanwhile, authorities have a suspect in custody in what Stafford authorities called a “chaotic” scene that unfolded at 2:27 p.m. Sunday.

The investigation revealed the victim and suspect are known to each other and were involved in an argument in the Wawa parking lot. The suspect took out a handgun and fired eleven rounds at the victim and the victim’s vehicle as the victim attempted to drive away.

The victim was struck with several rounds and crashed into a van on South Gateway Drive, leaving his vehicle inoperable. No bystanders were injured during the shooting.

The victim proceeded to run from the crash site on foot to the nearby Panera Bread. The driver of the struck van was not injured in the crash and remained on the scene.

Employees at Panera Bread and two sheriff’s deputies provided first aid to the victim, said to be a male in his 30s.

Both deputies continued treatment for the injured man until rescue arrived. Stafford Fire and Rescue transported the victim to the hospital for treatment.

The intersection was closed for several hours as detectives processed the scenes and collected shell casings.

A lookout for the suspect was broadcast, and detectives worked to obtain the identity and address of the suspect.

During the investigation, the suspect contacted law enforcement by phone and said he would respond to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office to meet with detectives.

Dorsean Johnson, 34, of Fredericksburg, is charged with aggravated malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, a Stafford sheriff’s office spokeswoman said. Johnson is being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.

The suspected firearm used during the shooting was recovered.

On October 21, the former site of the Dumfries Rescue Squad played host to Vice-President Kamala Harris, who rallied supporters of Terry McAuliffe for Virginia Governor.

Hundreds turned out for the rally, including several federal, state, and local politicians like Senator Tim Kaine, State Senator Jeremy McPike, and Delegate Luke Torian, representing portions of Prince William County. Locally, Prince William County Board Chair Ann Wheeler and Manassas Mayor Michelle Davis Younger also attended.

Sources say Dumfries Mayor Derrick Wood organized the event at the building. On his mayoral Facebook page, Wood thanked town residents for electing him and promised and more events to come.

A plan to build 25 new homes in Hartwood did not get the blessing of the Stafford County Planning Commission.

On October 27, the seven-member Board with seats appointed by county supervisors voted to deny an application seeking to develop Orris Estates on nearly 13 acres of land near the Lake Mooney Reservoir, on Manorwood Drive.

Drees Homes, a Washington D.C.-based developer, had applied to the planning commission for a zoning change in the Hartwood district that would allow for the development. It also needs a Conditional Use Permit to allow for the density required in such a neighborhood. Drees Homes had submitted a completed application for both the rezoning request and the conditional use permit in May 2021.

Durant

The Fredericksburg Police Department is considering a political sign getting spray-painted with a swastika an act of vandalism, says a spokesman for Tara Durant for Delegate.

At 8 o'clock Thursday morning, police contacted the campaign to notify it about the vandalism. Durant, a Republican, is running for the House of Delegates seat for the 28th District as a Republican. The sign, which was tagged with a white swastika, was located near the Umi Sushi restaurant on Route 1 next to the Lawerence A. Davies Transit Center, which is used as the central bus depot for FRED Transit.

This particular sign of one of the biggest set up the campaign. Three others of similar size are set up around the district. The 28th District includes Fredericksburg and a portion of Stafford County.

On Thursday night, Terry McAuliffe was a no-show in Prince William County at his get-out-the-vote rally at Belmont Bay in Woodbridge.

However, that didn't stop the enthusiasm of about 30 of his campaign supporters who gathered under the pavilion on Harbor Side Street, on the banks of the Occoquan River, to welcome the number two candidate on the Democratic ticket -- Hala Ayala, who calls Prince William County home.

"We are on track to deliver...on November 2," said Ayala. Elected to the House of Delegates in 2017, Ayala touted the record of the state's Democratic majority -- ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment, criminal justice reform, and abolishing the death penalty.
