In January, several new faces will sit on the Stafford County Board of Supervisors and School Board.
Monica Gary won the Aquia District seat on the Board of Supervisors, beating out Paul Milde, who previously served from 2006 to 2017. Gary ran as an independent, appearing at campaign events with both Democrats and Republicans.
She thanked her supporters, those who didn't vote for her, and thanked Milde for running " a good campaign."

Three Republican hopefuls in Manassas say they are the most qualified to serve the people.
Lynn Forkell Green, Stacia Jennings, and Anna Phillips have run a joint campaign this past year, seeking an open seat on the City Council, Commissioner of the Revenue, and Treasurer's office.
Like the rest of the state, Manassas has made a political lurch to the left in recent years, going from a Republican-controlled City Council in 2020 to a Democratically-controlled body in 2021.

In addition to the races for the trifecta of the state governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general, residents also voted for their districts’ representatives on the county board of supervisors and the school board.
Potomac Local went to Rocky Run Elementary School in Hartwood and the John Musante Porter Branch of the Central Rappahannock Regional Library in Garrisonville to find out how residents had voted.
In Hartwood, a small sample showed a majority of voters voting for Republican nominee Glenn Youngkin and voting straight down party lines. The Republican ticket appeared to save a slight advantage in Garrisonville, with voters voting straight down party lines.
Those who voted Republican based their decisions on recent local controversies such as the concern over Critical Race Theory in public schools and more global issues such as the United States’ current leaving from Afghanistan after 20 years of war in that region. Other reasons Republican voters gave were the ongoing abortion debate from a pro-life stance and the desire for lower taxes.
One Hartwood resident who did vote Democrat across the ballot said that his decision was made based on concerns for the environment and that the blue team was the side that seemed the most concerned on that front. Republicans under then-President Donald Trump had pulled the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Accord in 2017.
A Garrisonville resident, who said she voted Republican for years, switched party affiliation and voted Democrat across the board. The voter cited a lack of openness from Republicans to answer questions compared to the Democrats, claiming that when he asked questions of Republican Tara Durant’s campaign, he got no response but got responses from the Democrat incumbent Delegate Joshua Cole.
Both Durant and Cole are battling for the District 28 House of Delegates seat in Fredericksburg and Stafford. Each candidate has raised over $2 million, making it one of the most-watched races in the state.
Also in Hartwood, some voters chose Libertarian Tim Lewis. He is running for the delegate seat in the 88th district, representing areas of Stafford, Fredericksburg, and Spotsylvania. Voters for Lewis voters decided based on the agreement of libertarian values of smaller government that was felt not to be represented by either of the two major parties.
The Heartwood District seat on the Stafford Board of Supervisors is up for grabs. Darrell English, who served on the county’s Planning Commission, faces political newcomer Keith Jones.
Marc Broklawski and Alyssa Halstead, endorsed by Democrats and Republicans, respectively, are seeking the open Heartwood District School Board seat.
Elsewhere in the county, School Board seats in the Aquia, Garrisonville, and Falmouth districts are up for grabs. Maya Guy Wanda Blackwell and Sarah Chase are the respective candidates in those districts endorsed by Democrats.
David Fauth, Maureen Siegmund, and Scott Hirons, respectively, have the backing of Republicans.
By 1 p.m., a total of 1,958 had cast ballots in Hartwood, and 853 at the Porter Library in Garrisonville.
Polling places remained open for voting until 7 p.m.
Candidates for state and local races spent their lunch hour at a polling place at Brooke Point High School.
A steady stream of voters filed into the Stafford County high school as the rain poured. Delegate Joshua Cole (D-28, Fredericksburg, Stafford) greeted voters in what has become of the most expensive races in the state. By 1 p.m., nearly 1,500 had cast a ballot  at the polling place.
He and his Republican opponent Tara Durant have raised over $2 million during the campaign, and Cole had planned to raise only about $700,000 for the campaign.

Dumfries officials will hold a public hearing on Wednesday to ban firearms and ammunition at its town hall, located at 17739 Main Street.
The Town Council cites a state law that allows local governments to ban firearms in municipal buildings.
Specifically, in Dumfries, the proposed ban would affect only the town government offices at the town hall. Dumfries also rents office space within its town hall and will not ban guns in those offices, the town's ordinance states.

[Updated 1 p.m.] One person who was taken to a hospital after they were shot several times outside a Wawa gas station is expected to recover.
Meanwhile, authorities have a suspect in custody in what Stafford authorities called a “chaotic” scene that unfolded at 2:27 p.m. Sunday.
The investigation revealed the victim and suspect are known to each other and were involved in an argument in the Wawa parking lot. The suspect took out a handgun and fired eleven rounds at the victim and the victim’s vehicle as the victim attempted to drive away.
The victim was struck with several rounds and crashed into a van on South Gateway Drive, leaving his vehicle inoperable. No bystanders were injured during the shooting.
The victim proceeded to run from the crash site on foot to the nearby Panera Bread. The driver of the struck van was not injured in the crash and remained on the scene.
Employees at Panera Bread and two sheriff’s deputies provided first aid to the victim, said to be a male in his 30s.
Both deputies continued treatment for the injured man until rescue arrived. Stafford Fire and Rescue transported the victim to the hospital for treatment.
The intersection was closed for several hours as detectives processed the scenes and collected shell casings.
A lookout for the suspect was broadcast, and detectives worked to obtain the identity and address of the suspect.
During the investigation, the suspect contacted law enforcement by phone and said he would respond to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office to meet with detectives.
Dorsean Johnson, 34, of Fredericksburg, is charged with aggravated malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, a Stafford sheriff’s office spokeswoman said. Johnson is being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
The suspected firearm used during the shooting was recovered.
On October 21, the former site of the Dumfries Rescue Squad played host to Vice-President Kamala Harris, who rallied supporters of Terry McAuliffe for Virginia Governor.
Hundreds turned out for the rally, including several federal, state, and local politicians like Senator Tim Kaine, State Senator Jeremy McPike, and Delegate Luke Torian, representing portions of Prince William County. Locally, Prince William County Board Chair Ann Wheeler and Manassas Mayor Michelle Davis Younger also attended.
Sources say Dumfries Mayor Derrick Wood organized the event at the building. On his mayoral Facebook page, Wood thanked town residents for electing him and promised and more events to come.
