Carjacking arrest made

Woodbridge, Va. –– Police say they arrested a man who carjacked a woman in Woodbridge early Monday.

It’s one of three arrests in as many separate incidents that took place during the past two days.

The 35-year-old victim told police she had just started her car to let it warm up at Marumsco Plaza in Woodbridge at 12:01 a.m. Monday, when a man walked up and forced her from the car.

The victim fled and called police, whom later found the car parked on U.S. 1 in Lorton, said Prince William police spokesman Jonathan Perok.

A K9 unit from Fairfax County was brought in to search for the suspect, and he was later found nearby.

Felix Mendez Garcia, 27, is charged with carjacking and was held without bond, said Perok.

He is scheduled to appear in court April 13.

Police at 9:47 p.m.  Sunday were called to the 2700 block of Brier Pond Circle in Woodbridge after someone said they saw someone shooting a gun from a car.

The vehicle fled the area before police arrived, but they later found the car at a shopping center near Dumfries, said Perok.

No one was injured, and the alleged shooter, Harvey Newman, 37, of District Heights, Md., was later caught and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and with reckless handing of a firearm, said Perok. He was held without bond.

And finally, at 2:12 p.m. Sunday police were called to the area of Benita Fitzgerald Drive and Broker Lane in Dale City after a car struck a school speed zone sign.

After hitting the sign, the driver drug the sign underneath the car until it became unlogged from the vehicle near Fannie Fitzgerald Elementary School on Benita Fitzgerald Drive, said Perok.

The driver of the car was later found at a home on Princedale Drive and was arrested.

Daniel Russell Thompson, 31, of 14527 Princedale Drive in Dale City is charged with hit and run, driving on a revoked license, and with driving under the influence – his second offense in five years, said Perok.
