“If I fall, I fall. If I die, I die. I’ve got to suck it up. Can’t live forever,” D.J. Palmer replied, Fredericksburg Free Press reported. “I should be fully back walking in six months, everything like nerves, and all that will be back. I’ll be chasing the kids around and doing what I normally do.”
“This is going to be something special,” Palmer added.
“The bus driver who faces charges after five people were killed in a chain-reaction crash on I-95 in Stafford County, Virginia, was scheduled to appear in court this week for a speeding ticket, court records say,” WRC TV reported. “Dong charged with involuntary manslaughter after bus crash in Virginia.”
“The National Transportation Safety Board said it is still in the preliminary phases of its investigation into the root cause of the fatal crash. The NTSB said Dong was driving at ‘a high rate of speed.’”
“First arriving units marked on scene less than 5 minutes later and confirmed heavy smoke and fire coming from the front and rear of at least two townhouses, spreading into their respective attic spaces,” Stafford County Fire and Rescue announced. “The fire was brought under control in approximately 30 minutes.”
No occupants were injured, though one firefighter was evaluated on scene. In total, 10 adults and 8 children are being assisted by the American Red Cross after two townhomes were severely damaged and others sustained moderate to mild damage. The cause remains under investigation by the Stafford County Fire Marshal’s Office, with mutual aid from neighboring departments.
“The average person works 40 hours a week. We’re doing 56. So, if we can draw back and do 42, I mean it helps us, and it turns around and helps the community as well,” FOX 5 DC reported.
“A lot of departments are going to it because it is the best schedule for the fire department. And the fire department is here to serve the citizens, and we can do that adequately with the 56-hour workweek, but we can do it even better with a 42-hour workweek.”
A Stafford County grand jury on Monday, June 1, 2026, indicted Jing Sheng Dong, 48, of Staten Island, New York, on three additional felony counts of involuntary manslaughter and one misdemeanor count of reckless driving in connection with the May 30 tour bus crash on southbound Interstate 95 that killed five people.
The new indictments bring the total to five felony counts of involuntary manslaughter — one for each victim — along with the reckless driving charge. The charges relate to the multi-vehicle crash in a work zone and supplement two initial involuntary manslaughter counts filed against Dong on May 31.

Stafford County Fire and Rescue is celebrating the retirement of two of its members.
“Please join us in congratulating Technician Doug Gress who is retiring from Stafford County Fire and Rescue after more than 10 years, in addition to a full career as a United States Marine,” Stafford County Fire and Rescue announced. “Please join us in congratulating Battalion Chief Charlie Freeman on his retirement from Stafford County Fire and Rescue after more than 25 years of dedicated service!”
“There is no cause for concern. THIS IS A PRIVATE TRAINING EXERCISE,” Stafford County Sheriff’s Office announced. “The training will not be open to the public.”
The joint training exercise between the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office and Stafford County Fire and Rescue Department will take place today, June 1, as well as June 2, 8 and 9 from approximately 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at and around Gayle Middle School. Since the county’s last day of school was Thursday, May 28, the building is currently empty for summer break. Residents may notice an increased presence of public safety vehicles in the area.

The Stafford County Planning Commission voted 5-0 Wednesday night to recommend the Board of Supervisors deny key approvals for the Potomac Creek Campus data center project on 99 acres south of Eskimo Hill Road. The recommendation followed concerns about a historic cemetery on the site that includes Seddon family burials and unmarked graves believed to belong to enslaved individuals. Commissioners noted the location could otherwise suit data center development near the approved Stafford Technology Campus.

The driver of a tour bus involved in a multi-vehicle crash that killed five people on Interstate 95 has been arrested and charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter.
Stafford Commonwealth’s Attorney Eric Olsen announced Saturday that his office authorized felony warrants based on evidence showing the bus was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck slowed traffic in a work zone, causing a chain-reaction crash involving at least eight vehicles.
