Shared-use path on Route 234 south near Dumfries will be extended

From Prince William County Transportation Director Rick Canizales:

The purpose of this project is to complete a section of the Shared-Use Path along Route 234 southbound from 240 feet south of Exeter Drive to Country Club Drive, for an approximate distance of 4,300 feet. More specifically this proposed trail would connect from an existing trail at the north side of the First Mount Zion Baptist Church to the Brittany Community at Exeter Drive, proceeding north in front of the Brittany Neighborhood Park.

The proposed trail would then proceed north along Route 234 southbound approximately 1,175 feet to the signalized intersection for Fortuna Center Plaza and then will proceed approximately 3,125 feet north to connect to an existing trail at the signalized intersection of Country Club Drive.

The property that fronts Route 234 for this trail is the Prince William Forest Park which is owned by the National Park Service (NPS) for over 81% of the proposed trail’s length. The remaining frontage property is the Brittany Neighborhood Park.

In addition, the project will construct approximately 520 feet of Shared Use Path to fill the gap in front of the First Mount Zion Baptist Church and will extend it to the 7-11 entrance located at 4100 Talon Drive. This project will provide a continuous trail along Dumfries Road from Talon Drive to Liberia Avenue/Prince William County Parkway.

$2.7m construction is currently estimated to start in the summer of 2017. To be completed by Spring of 2018. We are currently looking at strategies to expedite the schedule.

To celebrate Air Quality Awareness Week (May 6-10, 2024), Clean Air Partners is working with A Few Cool Hardware Stores to exchange DC, Maryland and Virginia residents’ gas-powered lawnmowers, trimmers, and leaf blowers at select Ace Hardware locations in the region. DMV residents who turn in their gas-powered lawn tools will receive a FREE Ego Power+ replacement including batteries and chargers, while supplies last.

Compared to gas, electric lawn equipment can reduce emissions, noise pollution, health risks and maintenance costs and time. The program aims to remove about a hundred gas-powered polluting tools from yards in the greater Baltimore-Washington region.

The exchanges will take place the weekends of May 17-19, 2024, and May 31-June 2, 2024, at A Few Cool Hardware Stores network of employee-owned Ace Hardware stores in the DC and Baltimore metro areas.
