Microbrewery explosion continues in Prince William

A new microbrewery will open on September 24.

Brew Republic Bierworks in Stonebridge at Potomac Town Center is set to open its doors near Wegmans in Woodbridge.

Here’s an excerpt from an email newsletter sent Monday from Brew Republic Bierworks:

…assuming that we pass our remaining inspections and everything remains on schedule. But we wouldn’t ask you to pen (not pencil) 9/24 in your calendar if we didn’t have a high degree of confidence, and we’re aggressively preparing and planning for that day — so you can plan on it too.

The opening day shindig will begin at 11:00am and go until close. We will have live music, giveaways, food discounts, and oh yes, beer. Lots of beer! At least six on tap! We are a brewery after all. We’ll also have in-house made root beer for the kiddos (and anyone else who’d like something a bit sweeter).

We first told you about Brew Republic Bierworks when the brewery announced late last year it would open in 2016.

Ornery Beer Company, located at 14389 Potomac Mills Road in Woodbridge will celebrate its one-year anniversary two weeks before the opening of Bierworks, on September 10. Nearly 15 local breweries will offer tastings during an outdoor festival from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Tickets to the festival are $25 each, include a souvenir tasting glass, and 10 tasting tickets.

Ornery sits inside what was once Hard Times Cafe.

The business touts itself as the first brewpub in Prince William County, serving both locally-brewed beer and chef-inspired meals.

Prince William County residents have seen an explosion in the number microbreweries that have sprouted up in the past two years. At least six breweries that bear such names as Tin Cannon, Growling Bear, Waters End have all opened in Prince William County in the past 24 months.

Changes in a county zoning ordinance allowed these businesses to open in suburban retail areas. Old rules forced breweries and distilleries to locate inside areas zoned as light industrial parks.

In Manassas City last week, KO Distilling announced it would triple its production of whiskey and gin, and source all of its grain, wheat, and rye for its products from producers in Virginia. Todd Haymore, Virginia’s agriculture secretary, joined the owners of KO Distillery and the Manassas City Council to award $50,000 in state and local grants to fund KO’s expansion, to include the hiring of six new employees.
