Avoid I-95 north near Fredericksburg this afternoon

A truck traveling Interstate 95 hit an overhead sign last night. Today, officials closed a portion of the highway in south Stafford to repair the damage.

Here’s more in a press release:

Northbound Interstate 95 is closed in the Fredericksburg area and will remain closed for an estimated two hours so crews can perform an emergency sign removal for motorist safety.

An overhead sign was struck overnight by a vehicle, damaging the sign. The sign is located at mile marker 132, just north of the Rappahannock River Bridge.

All northbound traffic is being detoured off the interstate at Exit 130/Route 3 at Fredericksburg.

I-95 northbound is expected to be closed for two hours while the sign is removed. Severe travel delays are expected for northbound interstate traffic as well as traffic on primary roads and key connector roads in the Fredericksburg area. Motorists should plan to avoid the area if possible, or consider using Route 301 as an alternate route.

Detour Route

Northbound I-95 motorists should follow the posted detour route from Route 3 eastbound to Route 1 northbound to Route 17 Business, where motorists can access the northbound on-ramp to I-95 at Exit 133/Falmouth.

Commercial traffic and tractor-trailers can also detour to Route 1 northbound using Exit 126/Spotsylvania.

Ramps to northbound I-95 from Route 3 westbound and eastbound in Fredericksburg are also closed to traffic.

Traffic signal timing has been modified along the detour route to accommodate the anticipated extra traffic.
