Blizzard brings delays for report cards, college transcripts

As students mourn the loss of their beloved snow days, some stop to ask themselves; What does this mean for the remainder of the school year?

Prince William County  Public Schools are allotted 12 snow days this school year. After the #sNOVAlanche storm that blanketed the region with up to to two feet of snow January 22 and 23 , Prince William County Public School students and teachers have about 5 snow days left.

As of now, Prince William public schools students will not have to make up the missed time, according to school officials.

Many Prince William County School Board members received questions about snow make-up days following the blizzard.

I can not speak to how the snow days will affect all of our teachers and students. The responses I generally receive range from concern about being able to complete lessons and grade papers in time for the grading period closing to just happy to be off spending time with the family,” stated Woodbridge District School Board member Loree Williams.

This is also the time of year when students are faced with taking standardized tests. At this time, Standards of Learning (SOL) and Testing dates have remained unchanged.  Testing will begin in early May.

The second marking period of nine weeks has been delayed by five days. This will also push back the distribution of report cards by five days. This change also affects the delivery of transcripts to colleges.

According to school officials, colleges have been advised about the delay.

The time in which returning high school students are able to select their classes for next school year has been changed. Students and parents will be able to input their class preferences through their Parent Portal account, according to Prince William County Public Schools Student Information System.

High school webpages can be checked for their specific class selection start time and deadline.
