Miriam E. ‘Sherry’ Roberson

On December 9th, 2015, Sherry Roberson of Lake Ridge, VA entered into eternal rest.

Sherry was born on August 13th, 1923 in Canton, Ohio to Leo Michael Schario and Anna T. Farrar. Sherry grew up in the Canton area with her brothers Leo and Jim. During World War II, she served in the United States Marine Corp, where she met her husband, Lt. Col. Clinton “Robbie” Roberson (deceased 2012) .

Robbie and Sherry married December 15th, 1945. After the war, she returned to college and graduated from Ohio State University in 1946 with a major in Elementary Education and earned her private pilots license. Sherry and Robbie proceeded to travel on Marine Corps orders, finding themselves in destinations ranging from California to Michigan before settling down in Lake Ridge, Virginia in 1962.

Sherry had a passion for teaching people how to read. She retired from Prince William County Schools system after teaching first grade for many years. Later, she worked part time helping prisoners earn their high school graduate equivalent degree.

Sherry had a love for travel that she developed from her father who worked on the railroads. Their family would take trips to see the ‘big cities”. Sherry has taken her children on trips all over the world and took a four generation trip in 2011. She traveled to all seven continents.

As a member of her community she gave to many charities, was a hospice volunteer, sponsored children from developing countries and hosted families in transition from other countries to the United States. She also served on the Board of Directors of ACTS. Sherry was an original member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton Church.

She has been an active member in the church and began the Human Concerns group helping parishioners in time of need. This group continues to be an active part of the parish. She attended daily mass and afterwards her friends would meet for breakfast at McDonalds.

Later these friends formed into the Silver Foxes which is currently a thriving organization at SEAS. Helping people in need was a part of Sherry’s spirit and is carried on by her survivors.

Sherry is survived by eight children: five boys; George, David, Thomas, Lawrence, John and three girls; Mary Ann, Lorraine, and Teresa. They also have 14 grandchildren, four great-grandchild; and countless beloved friends.

The family will receive friends on Monday, December 14, 2015 from 2:00-4:00PM and 6:00-8:00PM at Miller Funeral Home, 3200 Golansky Blvd., Woodbridge, VA 22192.
