Man charged with murder, child neglect of foster son in Stafford

According to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office, David John Marcussen, a 33-year old Fredericksburg man has been charged with one county of felony murder, one county of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of cruelty to children and one count of child neglect.

On January 6, the Stafford sheriff’s office received a call from child protective services, stating that they had received information about an 11-month old boy, identified as Ka’ron Mason, who had been brought to a local hospital.

The child arrived at the facility with burns to his neck, torso and face, a Stafford sheriff’s release said. Once examined by staff, the boy was airlifted to the MCV Hospital in Richmond.

Detectives from the Stafford sheriff’s office investigated the incident further and made the determination that the child had received the burns while being given a bath by Marcussen – his foster father. Mason had been in Marcussen’s custody since July 2014.

The child died on February 1 in the hospital, said a Stafford sheriff’s office release.

The Stafford sheriff’s office stated that Marcussen turned himself in on April 17, and he is currently being held without bond.
