DALE CITY, Va. — A fight in a parking lot led to a shooting on Monday.

Police said a man suffered a gunshot to the upper body outside a McDonalds restaurant at 2981 Dale Boulevard, near a Kmart in Dale City. A helicopter was called to fly the victim, suffering what was believed to have suffered life threatening injuries, to a hospital. Police cars were seen rushing to the area about 7 p.m.

The shooter is believed to have fled in a car toward Neabsco Mills Road, in the direction of Freedom High School and the Woodbridge Campus of Northern Virginia Community College. The suspect’s car was found in the parking lot of Freedom High School, according to initial reports.

Police are also investigating a carjacking that occurred after a suspect fled on foot toward U.S. 1 and tried to carjack a driver in the area of Neabsco Mills Road and Dale Boulevard, according to initial reports. An investigation into the carjacking is now centered on Sequoia Court at the Misty Ridge Apartment complex in Woodbridge.

Freedom High School was told to take precautions following the shooting, police said. A K-9 was called to assist in the search for a suspect.

The police dragnet extended to nearby U.S. 1 in Woodbridge. A police helicopter was called to search for the shooting suspect.
