DALE CITY, Va. — The annual Dale City Fourth of July Parade will begin at 10 a.m. Friday.
There are 150 floats that will appear in this year’s parade, which travels from Mapledale Avenue east along Dale Boulevard to Gemini Way, near the Giant Food store in Center Plaza.
There are three bands, motorcycle clubs, Boy Scout troops, youth groups, and multiple churches that will participate in this year’s parade. The annual Independence Day event takes about two hours to wind its way down Dale Boulevard and is dubbed the largest July 4th parade in Virginia.
Bob Beach, 90, a World War II veteran who enlisted in the U.S. Navy when he was 17 years old, will serve as grand marshal for this year’s parade. The retired sailor owns a print shop and still goes to work each day.
“He served his country and he still serves his community each day,” said parade organizer Ernestine Jenkins.
Floats begin lining up at Mapledale Plaza one hour before the parade start time.
It’s usually hot outside during the parade, so bring lots of water if you plan to take your family out to watch the event. Some of the best parade viewing can be found around the Dale City Volunteer Fire Department station 13 at Dale Boulevard and Hillendale Drive. It’s a great place to see the parade proceed down a hill as it makes its way to Center Plaza.
A family fun day begins as soon the parade ends, in a commuter parking lot of Gemini Way. For those who don’t want to venture outside, the parade will be broadcast live on Comcast Cable channel 2 and will be rebroadcast on that channel several times in July, said Jenkins.
The eastbound portion of Dale Boulevard that the parade will travel will be closed to vehicular traffic. The westbound portion of the roadway between Minnieville Road and Mapledale Avenue placed under police direction and is used as a two-way street to accommodate drivers. Overall, it’s best to avoid driving on that affected portion of Dale Boulevard altogether and use Prince William Parkway as an alternate route, if you can.
