George Walter Purnell

George Walter Purnell, 77, of Woodbridge, Virginia passed away on June 4, 2014 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

George was born in Milford, Delaware on April 17, 1937.  He joined the Marine Corps in 1955 and served 20 years.  He served in Vietnam and was the recipient of the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V.

George married Margaret Hart in 1957; they were happily married for 57 years.

George is survived by his wife, Marge; son Brian (Karen) Purnell, daughter Melissa (Ron) Panaggio, son-in-law Bob Kinsler; grandchildren Sean Purnell, Kate Purnell, Sarah Glissman, Mary Panaggio, Robert Kinsler, Madison Kinsler, McKenzie Kinsler; and great-grandchildren Libby Glissman, Juliet Glissman, and Edith Kinsler.

George was preceded in death by his parents, George W. Purnell and Mary Virginia Purnell; his sister Sharon Nethen, and his beloved daughter Holly R. Kinsler.

Services will be held at 11:30 am on June 12, 2014 at the Marine Corps Museum Chapel followed by the interment at Quantico National Cemetery.  Relatives and friends are invited to join family at the Globe and Laurel in Stafford following the service.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation (www.marineheritage.org).  The family of George Purnell wishes to thank Potomac Place for providing loving care for George for the past few years.
