Updated: Fredericksburg Man Killed in I-95 Crash

Here’s the latest information on the fatal crash at Dumfries on Friday: 

At 11:15 a.m. Friday (Jan. 24), a Nissan Versa was southbound on I-95 when it ran off the left side of the road and struck the Jersey wall’s crash attenuator near Exit 152 (Dumfries) in Prince William County. The impact caused the Versa to become airborne, overturn and land on a Honda Civic that was also headed south on I-95.

The driver of the Civic, Matthew Wilkerson, 37, of Fredericksburg, Va., died at the scene.

The driver of the Versa, Greg S. Hall, 24, of Fredericksburg, Va., and his mother, Lesa Hall, 53, of Fredericksburg, Va., were both flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation at this time. Charges are pending.

All southbound lanes of I-95 were re-opened by 3:45 p.m.

Here’s the latest from Corinne Geller with Virginia State Police on this afternoon’s fatal crash on I-95 south in Dumfries.

State police are in the final stages of clearing from the wreckage of a fatal crash on Interstate 95 near Exit 152 in Prince William County. One southbound lane has been open since 12:15 p.m. The remaining lanes should be re-opened by 3:45 p.m.

At 11:15 a.m. Friday (Jan. 24), a Nissan Versa was southbound on I-95 when it ran off the left side of the road and struck the Jersey wall’s crash attenuator. The impact caused the Versa to become airborne, overturn and land on a Honda Civic that was also headed south on I-95.

The driver of the Civic, Matthew Wilkerson, 37, of Fredericksburg, Va., died at the scene.

The male adult driver and adult female passenger in the Versa were flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the crash remain under investigation at this time.

12:20 p.m. 

Police  now report the crash on I-95 south at Dumfries claimed a life. Here’s more in a statement from Virginia State Police: 

All southbound lanes of Interstate 95 near Exit 152 (Exit for Route 234) are closed as Virginia State Police investigate a fatal two-vehicle crash. At 11:15 a.m., state police were called to the scene in Prince William County. Two vehicles collided in the southbound lanes. One driver died at the scene. The driver and passenger of the second vehicle have been flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. (All individuals involved are adults.)

The Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team is on scene conducting its investigation into the cause and circumstances of the crash.

Southbound lanes will be closed for at least the next hour. Southbound traffic is currently being diverted to the HOV lanes.

11:55 a.m. 

Two helicopters have been called for a crash on Interstate 95 in Dumfries.

The crash happened on the southbound lanes of traffic just after 11:30 a.m. and involves multiple victims, and emergency crews were in the process of triaging patients. The southbound lanes of the highway were closed following the crash and delays backed to Dale Boulevard in Dale City.

Both helicopters were told to land on the highway to pick up the patients. There’s no word on what caused the crash or how many are injured.
