Here’s the latest from Virginia State Police on tonight’s crash:
At 5:41 p.m., Virginia State Police was called to the scene of a two-vehicle crash in the southbound lanes of I-95 at the 143 mile marker. A van and a commercial vehicle collided in the lanes. At least one person was transported to Stafford Hospital and another to Mary Washington Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
Southbound traffic was getting by on the left shoulder. All lanes were re-opened at 7:37 p.m. The lanes were closed again at 8:28 p.m. to allow a VDOT salt truck to get ahead of traffic and treat the highway. All lanes were re-opened within five minutes.
8:10 p.m.
NORTH STAFFORD, Va. — A serious crash Monday involving what appeared to be a semi truck and a commuter van closed Interstate 95 south for more than an hour and a half.
A portion of the highway near Va. 610 in North Stafford was closed about 6:30 p.m. and remained closed just after 8 p.m. Victims in the crash did become entrapped in one of the vehicles, according to initial information. Virginia State Police have not released any information on the crash.
A witness told PotomacLocal.com fire and rescue crews pulled victims from the van. It’s unclear now how many people were injured in the crash.
Stafford fire and rescue crews were called to the scene and assisted the victims, according to a spokesman.
Traffic was marred from Stafford County all the way back to Va. 123 in Occoquan in Prince William County.
This reporter spent more than two hours on the highway in an attempt to travel south from Prince William into Stafford County. Traffic on U.S. 1 found a better travel alternative to I-95 south, but traffic on that four-lane road was also congested.
