Stafford’s 350th Birthday Celebration Starts Saturday with Ice Skating, Time Capsule

NORTH STAFFORD, Va. — Stafford will ring in its 350th anniversary on Saturday with free ice skating and a day-long festival at Stafford Marketplace shopping center.

And free ice skating may be something everyone will want to take advantage of as temperatures on Saturday aren’t expected to climb out of the 30s.

But despite the cold, several fun events are planned throughout the day at the shopping center on Va. 610 in North Stafford, to include:

Ice skating rink (ice skates will be provided free of charge)

County Sponsored History Tent – hosting local historians, partners from all other 350th Anniversary programs, offering a first-hand look at the projects and programs planned for the entire year

Sight and hearing screenings for all ages

Foodbank food drive sponsored by the Lions Clubs of Stafford

Collection of used cell phones and eye glasses

Historical displays and re-enactors

Fun, food, and entertainment for all ages

A time capsule to be filled with items by Stafford County school children will take center stage 1:15 p.m. With history a main focus of the event, all of the Stafford’s public schools will have a “history tree” at the event depicting things building the U.S.’s original 13 colonies, the significance of Aquia Landing at the Civil War, and the recent growth in Stafford County.

This event will serve as a kick off for several more events planed in 2014 for mark Stafford’s 350th anniversary.

The project to widen Balls Ford Road between Doane Drive and Ashton Avenue to a four-lane, divided roadway is now officially complete. The county’s Department of Transportation held a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the parking lot of the General Shale Brick Company last week.

To celebrate Air Quality Awareness Week (May 6-10, 2024), Clean Air Partners is working with A Few Cool Hardware Stores to exchange DC, Maryland and Virginia residents’ gas-powered lawnmowers, trimmers, and leaf blowers at select Ace Hardware locations in the region. DMV residents who turn in their gas-powered lawn tools will receive a FREE Ego Power+ replacement including batteries and chargers, while supplies last.

Compared to gas, electric lawn equipment can reduce emissions, noise pollution, health risks and maintenance costs and time. The program aims to remove about a hundred gas-powered polluting tools from yards in the greater Baltimore-Washington region.

The exchanges will take place the weekends of May 17-19, 2024, and May 31-June 2, 2024, at A Few Cool Hardware Stores network of employee-owned Ace Hardware stores in the DC and Baltimore metro areas.
