2-Alarm Fire Burns Lake Ridge Town House

LAKE RIDGE, Va. – Christmas lights on Mayflower Drive were overshadowed by the flashing lights of fire engines Saturday night.
Flames broke out in the basement of an end-unit townhome at 1968 Mayflower Drive about 8:15 p.m. The flames quickly burst from the lower level of the 3-story home and traveled up the back of the house, as well as up through the boards of the second floor.
The fire was extinguished in about 10 minutes after fire and rescue crews arrived.
No one was inside the house when flames broke out. The occupants of the home stood on the sidewalk, visibly shaken, and spoke with fire investigators.
Several occupants inside the home were displaced, and the American Red Cross was called in to assist the fire victims but there services were not needed, said OWL Volunteer Fire Department spokeswoman Rebecca Barnes.
A second alarm was initially rung when first responders saw what they thought to be flames shooting from the roof. The flames were not coming from the roof but had rather traveled up the rear of the home and were visible from the roof, said Barnes.
Mayflower Drive was closed to traffic as fire crews remained on the scene for their investigation. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
