Woman Shot, Injured in Bizarre Incident at County Soccer Fields
PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — Who shot a woman in the leg while she was watching her child’s soccer game?
Police said the 43-year-old victim, of Gainesville, was sitting in a chair at George Hellwig Memorial Park at 14418 Bristow Road at Independent Hill and felt a sharp pain in her right thigh. She thought it might have been a BB or some other kind of small projectile that hit her, but doctors determined she had been shot with a smaller caliber bullet, possibly a .22 round, a police report stated.
The woman’s injury was not life-threatening, and no one in the area heard a gun go off, police stated. The incident remains under investigation.
Hellwig Memorial Park is home to several, heavily used soccer fields and is home to the Prince William County Department of Parks and Recreation.
Police have dubbed this case a malicious wounding and, in their press statement, have asked for the public’s help.
