Manassas’ Hughes Now Heads Stafford’s Parks

STAFFORD, Va. – After leaving his job as the city manager of Manassas, Larry Hughes is now spending his retirement in parks.

Hughes has been appointed the Interim Director of the Stafford County Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities Department.

He replaces former director Christopher Hoppe who remains with the county government but is now working to implement several county projects funded with bond money, said Stafford spokeswoman Cathy Vollbrecht.

Hughes comes to Stafford after he retired from the Manassas City Government in 2011 after 13 years on the job. Prior to that, Hughes worked as a deputy county executive in Prince William for 14 years.

“His background in local government made him an obvious choice for the position,” said Vollbrecht.

A nationwide search for a permanent Parks Director is planned but has yet to begin.

Stafford has 11 county-maintained parks, including North Stafford’s Government Island where stone was excavated and later used to build monuments in Washington, D.C., and Aquia Landing Park on the Potomac River.
