DUMFRIES, Va. — Summer camp is in full swing at the Boys and Girls Clubs in the Potomac Communities.

Boys and Girls clubs in Dale City, Dumfries, and Manassas, have welcomed 500 registered teens to the clubs for the annual “Send a Kid to Camp” summer event. Touted as an affordable quality alternative to other summer camps, the clubs offer basketball and volleyball leagues in the evening, and new a teen, and sports camp programs for those ages 5 to 17-years-old.

“Our phones have not stopped ringing since April, families are looking for a safe place with caring staff for their children,” said Prince William/Manassas Boys and Girls Club Director Glenn Vickers.

The clubs have received more than $15,000 in funds to help families in Prince William send their kids to camp. At a meeting of the club’s Board of Directors on Monday, Vickers read aloud letters written by area residents requesting financial assistance for their child for getting them into the camp. Because of the interest from the community, the need for donations is always great, said Vickers.

Overseeing summer camp, Camp Directors Judy Moore, Susan Ficarro and Nadia Petersen have more than 60-years combined experience in youth development.

All three Boys and Girls Clubs in Prince William County and Manassas are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day this summer, said Vickers.
