Freezing Rain, Sleet Expected Overnight

(File) About two inches of snow fell across the Potomac Communities on Saturday Jan. 8, 2011.

Update 3:20 p.m.

Here’s the latest on a storm that will bring a bit of winter weather to the area:

A winter weather advisory goes into effect at 11 p.m. and is set to expire at 1 p.m. Saturday. Snow, sleet and ice are expected to creep into the Potomac Communities late tonight and into the overnight hours, according to the National Weather service.

The perception will begin as snow and sleet, but will then change over to freezing rain during the morning hours, states the weather service. Temperatures are ripe for winter weather as they are forecast to be upper 20s and low 30s overnight, and into the low 40s tomorrow during the day.

Here’s more from the weather service:

Tonight: Snow, freezing rain, and sleet before 4am, then freezing rain and sleet likely. Low around 31. Southeast wind between 3 and 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. Total nighttime snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Saturday: Freezing rain and sleet likely before 10am, then rain likely between 10am and 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 41. Calm wind becoming north between 5 and 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

Saturday Night: Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with a low around 29. North wind between 5 and 8 mph.

Cold temperatures tonight will give way to sleet and freezing rain, weather forecasters said.

Sleet, freezing rain and ice could develop Friday night into early Saturday morning from a weather system that will impact the Potomac Communities. The latest forecast from the National Weather Service states little or no ice accumulation is expected, but we’ve seen those forecasts change before.

Off to the west along Virginia’s Interstate 81 corridor, some counties there are under a winter storm watch as some snow accumulation is expected there. Don’t count on any snow accumulation in the Potomac Communities from this storm, according to the weather service.

Temperatures in the area are expected to drop below freezing tonight but rise into the upper 30s on Saturday, changing whatever frozen precipitation that falls into rain.
