Lorton, Va. — A popular commuter cut-through route in Lorton has been reopened after floods washed out a bridge last month.
Lorton Road, between Va. 123 and Interstate 95, reopened over the weekend after Virginia Department of Transportation crews put the finishing touches on a new bridge over Giles Run. A portion of the old bridge was washed away and the road approaching the bridge was severely damaged in September after flood waters from the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee pummeled the region.
New steel beams and a timber deck with asphalt has been put in place in order to reopen the road, said Fairfax County Supervisor Gerry Hyland.
While the road is open, crews may still be in the area putting final touches to the bridge. Hyland said a flagger will be on hand to direct traffic.
