Cell service expands in Stafford

Stafford County, Va. –– Verizon has expanded its 3G data and cell phone coverage in Stafford County.

But the technology comes as customers in other parts of the region are seeing upgrades to even faster portions of the company’s cell phone data network.

Big Red announced Monday that two new cell sites have been constructed in the Berea section of the county, expanding Verizon’s service along the U.S. 17 corridor in south Stafford.

The area is home to the sprawling England Run subdivision, new commercial developments and the University of Mary Washington’s Stafford Campus.

The 3G data service allows mobile devices, such as Smartphones, faster access to information on the Web.

The expansion is part of Verizon’s $274 million investment into improving the regional network, according to a press release.

But the dated 3G technology is already on the way out, as the company unveiled earlier this month an even faster data service.

Earlier this month in the Potomac Communities, Verizon launched its 4G LTE broadband services in the Washington, D.C. market, making the service available to customers in southern Fairfax and eastern Prince William County.

Advertised as an improvement to 3G, it’s not yet available to Verizon customers in Stafford County, according to the company’s website.

Verizon officials say they plan to offer 4G service to all parts of the U.S. by 2013.
