Lake Ridge, Va. –– Antietam Elementary School in Lake Ridge recently hosted an evening of multi-cultural art, music, and education. The entire school—students and their families as well as staff members—were invited to participate.
This multi-cultural event was a joint effort of the Parent Teacher Association and Antietam Elementary School’s social studies committee.
“This was a fun and informative evening for everyone,” Antietam Elementary School Principal Linda Moniuszko said. “It left everyone hoping for more opportunities to share and celebrate the diverse heritages from many lands that are represented here at Antietam.”
Families were invited to dress in native garments for the event. Participants shared facts about their native homeland, and brought taste samples of foods cooked from traditional recipes. Students learned about martial arts and origami. The Tae Kwon Do exhibition was the highlight of the event. Both Moniuszko and Assistant Principal Margaret MacGregor used martial arts to break a board, which delighted the students.
“The children were thrilled to see their principal and assistant principal break a board and they all wanted to try to do it, too,” said Moniuszko.
