Updated: Speed a Factor in Deadly Boat Crash off Aquia Landing

Update 12:45 p.m.

Investigators working the scene of a deadly boat crash in Stafford County say speed was a factor.

A 19-foot Chaparral boat was leaving Aquia Creek and headed into the Potomac River when it collided with the number 10 channel marker off the shore of Aquia Landing Park beach in Stafford County. Witnesses on the shore told investigators the boat was traveling at a high rate of speed.

A unidentified 50-year-old man, who was onboard at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 41-year-old woman was taken to a hospital and treated for injuries that did not appear to be life threatening and was later released.

Investigators described the boat as a pleasure craft.

“It tends to be more of a recreational boat and not a fishing boat… it has a really long covered bow and fairly large engines,” said Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries spokesman Lee Walker.

Officials are working to notify the victim’s next of kin but he is not from our area, but was here working in the area, said Walker.

The boat did not sink and Investigators were able to tow it from the crash scene. The waterways at the scene of the crash remain open to boaters.

Walker could not confirm the exact time of the crash, but said the first 911 call about the incident was placed about 10:30 p.m.
